The Beginnings of Discovering Biblical Church
What Discovering Biblical Church Is All About
The Discovering Biblical Church website and book are published by Brother Barnabas Ministries. Brother Barnabas is the pen name shared by a cohort of like-minded writers and editors whose goal is to encourage pastors and church leaders across the Body of Christ at large. While many of the articles are written by the same author (Randy Brockett) and have a similar style, the life experiences related in the articles come from a variety of people rather than just one person. In fact, some of the illustrations and life stories are fictitious and were created to help make the point of the article.
Check out the video above or the podcasts below for more on DBC's background, vision, and purpose. Or, if your short on time, this quote from our founder, Randy Brockett, sums it up pretty well:
"Discovering Biblical Church came about as a result of some serious soul-searching on the part of those of us who have contributed their thoughts and life experiences for use in these devotionals. It has been a heart-breaking revelation to us that if we continue “doing church” the way that it has been done in the past, then the church will likely continue to decline. Pastors and church leaders are quitting in record numbers, more and more churches shutter their doors every day, and the culture around us is changing the church rather than the church changing the culture.
As we asked the Lord about this and searched the Scriptures, it became apparent that there are clear Biblical instructions that tell us how a church ought to be organized, who should do the work of the ministry, and how church people ought to relate to one another as they live out their Christian faith. There are even specific examples of what we should be doing in our church meetings and what to do to make our churches strong. The sad truth, however, is that we have basically ignored the plain teachings of Scripture because “that’s the way we have always done it.”
It’s time that we go back to the New Testament and apply the teachings of Jesus, Paul, and the others to how we do church in the 21st century. The contrast between what the Bible teaches and how we actually do church can be challenging at first, but if we hold fast in our love for the Lord and for one another, we can come together and discover how to do church the way it is described in the New Testament.
When we do, when we take to heart the New Testament teachings and begin to change our thinking and put into practice the Biblical commands regarding church leadership, organization, and lifestyles, we will begin to see an increasing number of Jesus-followers who have the passion and faith of the Christians in the New Testament.
May the Lord give us the grace to follow Him as we think through how we do church and discover Biblical church together."
